There is nothing worse than going to the effort of curling your hair for a night out, only to have the curls drop within half an hour of leaving the house. Whether your hair is straight and fine, or heavy and frizzy, these 7 tips will help your curls last until the sun comes up.  1. Start with a good curling tool Let us introduce the first step in your curling routine, our beautiful Gisou Curling Tool, the perfect curl companion.  The Gisou Curling Tool features a nostalgic, 90s, honey dripper-inspired custom design, with a 1-inch ceramic barrel and 10 temperature settings. The wide range of temperature settings allows you to find the perfect heat for your hair type (we will get into this more later), and the 1-inch barrel is extremely versatile.  It is the perfect curling wand to create anything from tight curls to loose beachy waves. The ceramic barrel also ensures even heat distribution and helps to control frizz. 2. When and how to curl your hair?  We recommend not curling your hair right after washing it. Freshly washed hair is very soft and clean and will lose definition fast. Try to wait until 2 or 3 days after washing, as curls tend to hold better in dirtier hair. This is because the natural oils from your scalp give the hair more texture and natural hold so there’s a better chance the curls will last longer.  If you’re worried about your hair looking oily, apply a small amount of dry shampoo at the roots, to help absorb any extra oil. If this really isn’t your thing, you can also skip conditioner during your washing routine and then curl after washing, as this will prevent your hair from being too soft to hold your curls. If you do curl after your washing routine, make sure your hair is totally dry before curling - damp hair will frizz and your curls will drop!  3. Choose the right temperature setting for your hair type Right, it’s day 2, you have your curling tool ready, and now you have to choose a temperature setting. For finer hair types start out using the tool at lower temperatures - around 160 to 180 degrees. This also goes for colour-treated or highlighted hair to help prevent fading and damage.  For thick to coarse hair, you can go from 180 to 230 degrees. Keep in mind that if your curling tool is too hot, this can actually have the opposite effect and cause your style to drop - opt for the lowest possible setting for your hair type to prevent damage and lack of hold.   4. Section your hair and decide on the curling angle If you’d like to create a tight curl, point the top of your Curling Tool down, if you’d like more loose, beachy waves, keep the curling tool horizontal. To make your curls last longer, divide your hair into three sections and curl smaller pieces of hair. This will give you a tighter curl and better hold. The key to lasting curls: Prep, Prime and Protect Preparing your hair for the perfect curls will set you up for success. Start out by applying a pea-sized amount of our Propolis Infused Polishing Primer to the lengths of your hair (you can opt for a little more if your hair is on the longer side). You can also clip it up or use a velcro roller to hold it in place whilst you do the rest of your hair.  This will help the curl to set, making them last longer. 7. Aftercare After allowing your curls to cool, you can let them down and gently run your fingers through them or use a wide-tooth comb if you are going for a beachy wave look. Brushing them with a normal brush will pull them out. Whilst they may be tighter than you want at the start we would recommend leaving them this way, as they will gradually drop over time.  As a final step for everlasting curls, apply a couple of sprays of our Propolis Infused Texturising Wave Spray. Gisou Bees Q&A with Negin Mirsalehi When was the Mirsalehi Bee Garden set up? “My father grew up in Iran, where he practiced beekeeping since he was a little boy, just like the generations before him. As a young man in the 70s with a true passion for beekeeping, he wanted to find the best place where he could start his very own bee garden. A place where he could set up hives successfully and keep healthy bees. Discover Gisou’s heritage story here.” Who takes care of the bees in the Mirsalehi Bee Garden? “My father oversees our Mirsalehi Bee Garden to this day. As an active practicing beekeeper myself, I help my father in the Mirsalehi Bee Garden as often as I can - going there to spend time in nature amongst the bees is like a meditation session for me. Through Gisou, I want to encourage more young people to explore and experience what beekeeping is all about!” How far back does beekeeping go in your family?  “The craft of beekeeping is a Mirsalehi family tradition which goes back six generations! Simply put, the Mirsalehi Honey Bees are at the core of who we are and what we do at Gisou, and we strive to give them as much as they give us.” The magic of honey bees: Bees are some of the hardest working creatures on the planet, converting honey with a special, almost magical precision. A bee produces a teaspoon of honey (about 5 grams) in her lifetime. To make one pound of honey would require 768 worker bees their lifetime to fly more than 55,000 miles to collect nectar from 2 million flowers. Honey's composition is determined by the flowers from which bees collect nectar. No batch is ever the same - the floral sources available to our Mirsalehi Honey bees changes throughout bee season. Our curly community out there knows that curly hair needs a little extra love to reach its full potential. Curly hair is dryer than other hair types, and the curls themselves can easily lose their shape and become frizzy. Enhancing your natural curls will take a little bit of time and effort, but it will be worth it in the end! The first step to enhancing your curls is to know your curl pattern, as the journey towards well-defined curls is different for each of them.  How do I identify my curl pattern?  Curl patterns are determined by the shape of the hair follicle, which influences the shape of the hair strand. There are 4 main hair types, and 3 main curl types, each with a number of subcategories. Type 1 – Straight: This hair type is straight, shiny and resilient, however, it is also the most difficult to curl. Sebum (oils) can travel easily down the length of straight hair, often making it oily and difficult to style. The strand is pin straight or has a slight wave to it.  Type 2 (our first “curl” type) – Wavy:  This is the middle ground between straight and curly. This hair type can hold a curl better than straight hair, but can also be prone to frizz. The strand is a loose “S” shape giving the hair more body than straight hair. This curl type tends to be straighter at the crown, wavy in the middle and possibly dry on the ends.  Type 3 (curl type Numero Deux) – Curly: The strands have an “S” or “Z” shape and range from loose to tight spiral curls. These curls tend to start right from the crown and go down to the ends of the hair. This curl type is easily damaged and highly prone to frizz, making it easy for curls to lose definition. Type 4 (last but not least) – Coily: This hair type is tightly coiled in a corkscrew shape and densely packed. Coily hair has fewer cuticle layers than other hair types, making it very fragile and prone to damage and dryness.  You’ve identified your curl type, now what?  Here are some product tips to keep in mind per curl pattern:  Tips & Products for Wavy hair: Dehydration, damage, and heavy styling products can straighten out your waves.  Therefore, focus on using lightweight and hydrating products. Our Honey Infused Leave-In Conditioner is the perfect option for this hair type, as it will nourish your hair, without dragging down your waves. You’ll go from frizzy curls to soft waves in no-time! Use a sulfate-free shampoo such as our Honey Infused Hair Wash to avoid stripping your already fragile hair of its natural oils.  Curly hair can withstand slightly heavier formulations, so you can opt for cream products. Scrunch the product into the lengths of your hair whilst damp, to enhance curls and prevent frizz as it dries.  Tips & Products for Coily hair: Similarly to curly hair, coily hair is fragile and needs hydration. Focus on deeply hydrating your hair weekly using our Honey Infused Hair Mask. This is a very rich and nourishing mask that will help strengthen and moisturise your hair.  After washing, opt for oils and heavier creams to lock in moisture and keep your hair hydrated throughout the day. We would recommend using 3 to 4 drops of our Honey Infused Hair Oil on damp hair. Warm the product up in the palms of your hands and scrunch it in.  This is a great option for coily hair types, as Mirsalehi Honey - the key ingredient of our Hair Oil and Mask - is a natural humectant that helps to maintain the hair’s natural moisture balance, resulting in healthier, softer and stronger locks. Extra tips for perfect curls 1. The right drying technique Never rub your hair with a towel, this will rough up the cuticle, cause frizz, and ruin your curls - it’s just a disaster all round. Instead, try “plopping” your hair. To do this, gather all of your hair on top of your head and wrap it up in a cotton t-shirt or hydrophilic towel, then leave it there to dry completely. This will help maintain your curl pattern as your hair dries.  You can choose to apply the Leave-in Conditioner or Primer before putting it up to give added moisture and hold as your hair dries. Alternatively, you can also use a diffuser to dry your hair to help enhance your natural curl pattern. 2. Use the right brush Brushing out curls with a bristle brush will pull the hair, cause breakage, and disturb your curl pattern. Opt for a wide-toothed comb instead, and try combing your hair in the shower after conditioning instead of when it’s dry. You can then leave your hair to air dry or try the plopping method mentioned above!  3. Don’t skip the hairdresser Get regular trims to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy. When getting a trim, opt for feathering the ends as this will lighten the hair and encourage your curls to form! The shorter your haircut, the lighter your hair will be, allowing the curls to form more easily. For wavy hair types, the longer your hair is, the more likely your curls are to be weighed down. 4. Wash your hair less Overwashing your hair can strip it of its natural oils. As mentioned before, curly hair is already a little dry and needs these oils to stay healthy. When you do wash, opt for a gentle, sulfate-free, nourishing shampoo. You could also try co-washing, which is when you wash your hair using only a conditioner and no shampoo. This will allow you to gently remove some of the oils and product buildup, whilst maintaining moisture in the hair.  Wrapping up Ditch the straighteners and embrace your natural curls. Have you ever watched the Friends episode, “The One in Barbados” where Monica gets off the plane and the humidity immediately turns her hair into a massive frizzy mess? Continue reading to find out what causes frizzy hair, how to prevent it and how to enhance your natural hair without frizz.  So what causes frizzy hair? Every hair is covered in overlapping scales called the hair cuticle, which helps to strengthen and protect the hair cortex and medulla. These scales point downwards, away from your roots. When the hair cuticle has raised, it allows moisture from the air to enter the hair shaft, making it swell, leaving you with frizzy hair. When the cuticle is lying flat, on the other hand, your hair will look smoother and shinier.  What causes the hair cuticle to raise? Dryness When your hair is dry, the cuticle raises to absorb moisture from the air. When the hair has absorbed moisture, the cuticles lift and swell, causing the hair to look frizzy.  Damage Damage caused by heat styling, colour treatments, tight hairstyles etc. causes the cuticle to become rough and dull, lifting the scales and even totally stripping them away. When the hair is damaged it also becomes more porous, exposing the fragile inner cortex causing it to attract moisture. Environmental factors The weather obviously plays a huge role in whether our hair will behave or not (ask Monica). The more moisture there is in the air, the more likely your hair is to become unruly, frizzy and puffy leading to a loss of shine and softness. Hair type Unfortunately for our curly girls and guys, frizz comes naturally. Curly hair is often drier by default as the oils cannot travel easily down the hair shaft, and the cuticles also tend to be rougher due to the curl pattern. But we’re here to help you turn your frizzy curls to soft waves. Keep reading for our best tips! Now we know what causes frizz, but how do we prevent it? While a little bit of frizz is inevitable, there are some simple steps we can take to keep it to a minimum. Step 1: Sulfate-free shampoo We know you’ve heard it a million times, but sulfate-free shampoo (such as our Honey Infused Hair Wash) is the way to go to avoid stripping your hair of its natural oils and drying it out even more. Sulfates are not necessarily harmful, however, they can strip the hair and scalp of natural oils, as well as lift the hair cuticle, making your hair more likely to frizz.  Step 2: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! If your hair is hydrated from within, the cuticle does not need to raise so much to absorb moisture from the surrounding air. Add our Honey Infused Hair Mask into your routine, to deeply nourish and hydrate your hair once or twice a week. A level up from conditioner, hair masks tend to contain more concentrated ingredients to moisturize your locks and repair damage to the cuticle.  As they are left on for a longer period than conditioner, a mask can fully absorb into the hair. When used regularly, nutrient-rich hair masks can help rehydrate and nourish your hair, helping to restore it over time. After rinsing out your mask, be sure to follow up with the Honey Infused Conditioner. This will help to lock in the moisture and nourishment from your mask by closing the cuticle. Try to leave your conditioner on for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing. Step 3: Keep cool When washing, try keeping the temperature down. Hot water will strip your hair of natural oils, and lift the cuticle, making frizz far more likely. Try rinsing your hair with lukewarm to cool water.  Step 4: Detangle in the shower Especially good for curly hair, try to detangle your hair using a wide-toothed comb after conditioning. This will help prevent friction and maintain your natural curl pattern.  Step 5: Dry gently Avoid rubbing your hair when drying with a cotton towel. This will rough up the cuticle and cause frizz, tangles and even breakage. Instead, we would advise squeezing the hair dry using a hydrophilic towel or cotton t-shirt.  Step 6: Heatless styling & heat protection We know it is tempting to heat style your hair regularly especially if you are trying to tame frizzy hair, however, this could be aggravating the situation by drying the hair out and causing damage. If you really need to use heat tools, try using them on the lowest setting possible. Use styling tools with different temperature settings, such as our Curling Tool which has 10 temperature settings.  Always use a good heat protection spray to avoid damage. Step 7: Lock in that moisture!  After your washing routine, it is very important to lock in the moisture. This will help lock in moisture and prevent the cuticle from lifting when it is exposed to humidity.  Step 8: Keep it trimmed! Sadly, there are no products that can seal split ends, once the hair is split - that’s it. Once he settled here, the first thing he did was start his own bee garden in Almere, a small town just outside of Amsterdam. Gisou is founded by and driven by women. Gisou's heritage stems from female influence which is passed on to the next generation. Take for example the Gisou bee colonies, where the female worker bees carry all the work and produce our hero ingredients, honey and propolis. We also take our inspiration from our community, and female beekeepers around the world, who are committed to learn, spread awareness and share their inspiring stories. In honor of Women’s History Month, we spoke to four female beekeepers around the world, from the Netherlands to Utah. How 4 Female Beekeepers Got Their Start Cecilia Pace Location: Pratola Peligna, Abruzzo, Italy IG: @cecile_92 Beekeeping since: 2011 Inspiration to start beekeeping: “I come from a second generation beekeeping family. My dad started beekeeping more than 40 years ago and passed on his knowledge to my brothers and I. Today, we run a family business together, Apicoltura Colle Salera, producing 19 different kinds of organic honey.  We have a nomadic approach to beekeeping: we move to different regions in Italy, from Puglia to Emilia Romagna. This way, we make the most of the blossoming season so that our bees have access to the best pollen and nectar.” McKay Opeifa Location: Salt Lake City, Utah IG: @mckayjo Beekeeping since: 2012 Inspiration to start beekeeping: “Since I was a little girl, I have always loved insects. So naturally, I chose to study Entomology. The university I was studying at had the 10th largest bee collection in the world and I got hooked. I’m currently studying for my Master Beekeeper from Cornell University. I’m a honey collector, a teacher and a self-proclaimed honey sommelier!” Nina Moerdijk Location: Scheveningen, The Netherlands IG: @oceansidebeekeeping Beekeeping since: 2019 Inspiration to start beekeeping: “Three years ago, I decided I wanted to do something that wasn’t just for me. I immediately thought about doing something with nature, since my dad - a fossil and shell collector - taught me a lot about nature from a young age. I followed a one-year beekeeping course and now I take care of four of my own bee colonies!” Hannah Mather Location: Central Florida, USA IG: @hannahshoneycomb  Beekeeper since: 2018 Inspiration to start beekeeping: “I’ve always been fascinated by nature and insects. In college, I studied insect-borne diseases and fell in love with the complexities of entomology. After spending some time working in a lab, I knew I needed to be more hands-on with the creatures I loved, so I turned to beekeeping instead!” What’s your favorite thing about beekeeping?  McKay: The energy! I can feel the bees’ energy and I know they can feel mine. I love to have the bees circle all around me. It’s a great reminder to be present, to bring a calm energy to them.  I also love that bees teach us new things every day. Science is in awe of the honey bee, and the medical world is discovering a lot of unexplored avenues with bee products. It’s exciting and makes me feel like I’m a part of something magical. Cecilia: I love going to our apiary: the birds singing, the fresh and clean air, the sun kissing my face, listening to bees singing while laying on the ground. It’s always so moving. Nina: The whole bee ecosystem is so perfect. It’s really beautiful to see how bees reflect our environment. For example, when I open the hive I can smell which flowers they’ve collected nectar from. Bees are also so inventive! They never cease to surprise me.  Hannah: Being able to witness the complexities of the hive firsthand, while being forced to be in the moment and temporarily forget all the other stressors of life and things on the to-do list. Favorite fun fact about bees? Nina: For one single jar of honey, bees fly the distance around the world. They put so much work into making the honey. Bees actually make way more honey than they can use - they make as much as they can store. Hannah: That all the worker bees in a colony are female, it’s amazing what a large group of girls can create! McKay: Recently I have rediscovered the collaborative energy of the bees and the signals they send to each other. Together they thrive — not one of them would be able to survive alone, not even the Queen. There are a lot of life lessons to learn there. Cecilia: We can distinguish from bees how much they sing, when they are happy and when they cry, because we have a symbiotic relationship with them. Challenges as a female beekeeper? Cecilia: Beekeeping has always been considered as a man’s job, despite the bees’ system being matriarchal! Unfortunately, it can be hard for women to be accepted this wonderful world. For many people it is unthinkable that women could do this job.  McKay: I really haven't faced any challenges as a female. I did attempt to join the beekeeping club here in the city and found very quickly there was no one like me there, just a good handful of middle aged men! Hannah: Beekeeping can be quite labor intensive, and there is often an incorrect assumption that we all have a man behind the scenes doing the heavy lifting. We must work harder to be taken seriously in the “bee world”, but thankfully, that seems to be changing as more of us share our stories! A typical day as a beekeeper Nina: It really depends on the season. In early spring, I make sure the queens are still alive and that they have enough food until spring really hits. When the season starts, I do a weekly check-up to make sure they don’t swarm, so I can split the colony on time. They need enough room to store pollen and honey - if the hive is too full, the queen leaves. Cecilia: We usually go to our apiaries to check the bee colonies, to examine the queen and to see if they have enough food. During midsummer, hungry bears tend to come visit us, so we monitor our apiaries from a distance with a specific technology and intervene if something happens. Hannah: No day as a beekeeper is “typical”, and that’s what I love the most! Depending on the time of year, a day of beekeeping can consist of inspecting the health of colonies, relocating swarms for the local community, harvesting honey, or editing photos and writing about bees for educational purposes.  McKay: As a beekeeper, there is no typical day. One day I am catching swarms or hosting a honey tasting class and the next day I’m working with kids. That is the beauty of it; I have created a life around my passions and I wake up every day with a new thing to try and learn. I am so wonderfully fulfilled with what I do as a beekeeper! The beauty & health benefits of honey & propolis McKay: We’ve only scratched the surface of the benefits of honey and propolis. Honey, beeswax, bee venom and propolis are unlike anything else you will find in this world. They dance together in such a beautiful way to keep the hive functioning, guarding it against predators and against disease.  We are constantly finding new ways everything from the hive can be implemented into the medical world as well as beauty! Hannah: Both honey and propolis have amazing anti-microbial properties that can gently help skin conditions without any harsh side effects.  Cecilia: Honey and propolis have superlative beneficial properties! Propolis is by definition a natural antibiotic: it disinfects and anaesthetises. Honey is full of antioxidants and never goes bad. It also has many benefits for the respiratory tract.  Nina: I actually make my own lip balm with honey and beeswax. It’s like a super hydrating overnight treatment. I also use it to fixate my eyebrows. I use propolis drops for when I feel like I’m getting a cold, so more for medicinal use. Advice for how to start beekeeping? Hannah: Start with research! Read all you can, reach out to local beekeepers or even beekeepers on social media. Many areas have local beekeepers associations that are a wealth of knowledge and can help you get hands-on experience to build your confidence before bringing your own hive home.  Nina: Just try to find local beekeepers whom you can learn from. Beekeepers are so passionate about what they do so they’re always happy to talk. Just ask around! Secondly, you can look for a local beekeeping club and do a course. If the courses are full you can always volunteer, there’s always help needed in the garden.  Lastly, you really need to be committed. It’s all-year around. For example, during spring you can’t really travel, so you need to make some sacrifices. McKay: Learn to love bees. If you love your bees, you will naturally want to educate yourself on how to help them, you will do what is best to help them, and ultimately be successful. So love them, slow down and listen to them. Cecilia: The advice I feel like giving is the following: read a lot and especially find a beekeeper in your area and offer your help. Direct experience on the field really makes the difference! How do you educate people around you on the importance of bees & their welfare?  Hannah: The first step in my opinion is to get people to notice bees and realize that we are not separate from nature. Nature is all around us and relies on us for survival. Try to notice things around you, be curious and ask questions - this will lead to wanting to protect nature.  McKay: With the world being so uncertain at times, it can be hard for kids to stay grounded, be confident and form their own ideas. This is what beekeeping offers. The kids that come to my hives have a fire and passion in their eyes. They’re more courageous than some adults I know! As for the adults, I try to teach them about bees and honey during my tasting sessions. This beautiful experience forces them to slow down and pay attention. I’ve discovered that most people know close to nothing about bees. If only they knew what they were missing, they would do a better job at trying to help the bees.  Cecilia: I welcome groups of people, both adults and children, to our apiary so that they can learn more about the bees’ ecosystem. People are often scared of bees, and I believe that direct experiences with bees are the best way to sensitize them and make them understand that nature should be treated with respect. Nina: Bees are such magical insects, there’s so much to tell. When the bee season starts, I take my followers along through my Instagram Stories with everything I encounter. Everyone is super engaged! I let my followers pick the name for my queens, and they’ve come up with some really good ones: Regina George, Beeopatra, Bee Gees and of course Beyonce! What are some small things anyone can do to help the bees thrive?  McKay: There is a lot you can do, but there’s one thing that is good for the bees, but also good for your soul.... plant flowers! It’s such a joy to get dirt under your fingernails and make the world a little more beautiful. Look up the native flowers in your area, they will be easier to take care of, and not only the bees, but all the surrounding insects and vegetation will thrive. The second thing: stop spraying your garden with pesticides, pull your weeds and find alternatives for the pesticides you use. They are more harmful than you think and it can take years to get them out of the plants’ system. With a little more patience you will learn a lot and the pollinators will love you.   Nina: If you can, buy organic food which has not been sprayed with pesticides. People don’t realize that pesticides are bad for the bees. If a bee comes in contact with certain pesticides, and brings it back to the hive, the whole colony dies. 70% of the food we eat is dependent on pollination from insects. Without pollinators, we wouldn’t even have fruits and vegetables!  Hannah: The most important thing that we can all do to help bees thrive is planting diverse, native, nectar-rich flowers that provide sustenance and habitat for them. Habitat loss is the biggest threat facing our bees.  Cecilia: Always help and respect the bees. When you see a stunned bee, give her some honey or water as a refreshment. They won’t attack you and they’ll be super happy! Bees only sting if they feel attacked. Plant as many flowers as you can, try to pollute less and make respecting nature a lifestyle! At Gisou, one of the things we always take into consideration when developing new products is that they need to be suitable for all hair types, so that they can tackle various hair concerns. We’ve mentioned the benefits of using a Scalp Treatment Serum before, and our Community Members put it to the test:  Leah “My hair-care routine before trying this Scalp Serum consisted of using the Gisou Honey Infused Hair Mask once a week in the shower and finishing off with Honey Infused Hair Oil on my ends.  Since I started using the Honey Infused Scalp Treatment, my routine looks like this: After I dry my hair I use the Hair Oil on the ends of my hair. I then part my hair to the right, squeeze some of the Honey Infused Scalp Treatment on my scalp, then part my hair on the left side and repeat. Lastly, I massage the product in, put my hair into a bun, then I go to bed!  My biggest tip is to not put it on if you’re about to go out somewhere because it will look like your roots are oily, if you have oily hair like me. By Mana, Gisou Beauty Advisor I spent years thinking I was doing all the right things - I bought the “expensive” drug store shampoo (because expensive means it’s good, right?), I didn’t overwash my hair, I avoided heat styling, never color-treated my hair, you name it.  Despite all this, every week without fail, my scalp would feel itchy, dry and flaky a couple of days after washing, and my hair just looked…dull. I figured this must just be my hair type, and there wasn’t much that could be done about it. Turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong!  Have you ever had that thing happen, where you learn a new word and then suddenly you hear it everywhere. Well, that was me and sulfates. When I joined Gisou and began my ingredient and product training, the phrase “sulfate-free” came up like a mantra.  Of course, I’d heard about sulfate-free products, but it had never really occurred to me that this could be the root of many of my hair and scalp issues. I started inspecting the long, confusing list of ingredients on the back of my haircare products, and boom, there they were loud and clear. What are sulfates? Essentially, sulfates are detergents, or cleaning agents used to break down dirt and oils. They are also surfactants, used to create that thick, foamy effect most of us love in our shampoos and body washes. The most common sulfates found in store-bought shampoos include sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, and ammonium laureth sulfate. Are sulfates bad for hair? Technically, no. Sulfates are not necessarily harmful, however, they can be too good at their job, stripping the hair, scalp and skin of natural oils, and leaving it feeling dry and brittle. Because of this, certain people can benefit from avoiding sulfates in their self-care products.  You will benefit from using sulfate-free hair care products if… You have sensitive skin or a sensitive scalp If you have eczema or psoriasis, sulfates can make your skin dry, itchy and red. So we would 10/10 recommend a sulfate-free shampoo for you.  You have dry skin or hair This goes without saying - if you already struggle with dryness, why use something that’s going to dry you out even more? I definitely fall into this category. As someone with dry skin and hair, sulfates were definitely drying my scalp out even more, resulting in that uncomfortable itchiness days after washing.  Your hair is fine  Our guys and gals with finer hair types will know that you have to be extra gentle with your hair to avoid breakage. Shampoos with sulfates can be far too harsh for more fragile hair types, leaving them more prone to dryness and damage.  Your hair is frizzy Those who struggle with frizz will know, we will do anything to win this ongoing battle with the elements. You’re probably wishing someone told you this sooner, but sulfates lift the hair’s cuticle, making your hair more likely to frizz. If frizz is one of your main struggles, cut the sulfates!  Your hair has been dyed or chemically-treated Your hair needs a little extra love after putting it through these processes, and a good sulfate-free shampoo is the best basis for a haircare routine that will nourish the hair and protect your color. Not to mention the fact that sulfate-free shampoo can also keep brassiness at bay.  When are sulfates ok? We don’t want to make sulfates out to be all bad. Sometimes they can be beneficial. For example, if you have heavy product build-up or if you have a very oily hair type, a shampoo with sulfates might be your thing. Those who love a super foamy shampoo are also drawn to products containing sulfates, as you won’t get the same sudsy action from sulfate-free products.  Our Honey Infused Hair Wash Here at Gisou, we prioritize making our formulations as natural as possible and having a sulfate- and paraben-free formulation was a part of this. As I started using the Gisou Honey Infused Hair Wash, I had to go through a transition period after years of using products with sulfates, but in the end, it was totally worth it!  Switching to sulfate-free shampoo Changing from a shampoo with sulfates can be a tough transition — your hair may appear oilier at first and not feel as clean. After years of using products with sulfates, your hair may have started to overproduce oil to compensate for being stripped clean.  Your hair will take time to adjust to the new formulation as it rebalances its oil production. Don’t worry - this will settle down. The key is patience, it can take up to 6 weeks for the hair to totally adjust. How to use sulfate-free shampoo: Make sure your hair is soaked before applying the shampoo: this is important as it will help you easily distribute the product throughout your hair. Less is more: apply 2 to 3 pumps of the Honey Infused Hair Wash into the palms of your hands, mixing with a small amount of water. Rub the palms together to create a gentle lather. Keep in mind that this product won’t create huge clouds of foam — this doesn’t mean you need more!  Focus on your scalp: once you’ve lathered the product, focus it on your scalp. Take this time to really massage the product with your fingertips and let it do its work. Rinse and repeat: if you have oilier hair, you might want to do a rinse and repeat to really lift the oil and product out of your hair.  Rinse, rinse, rinse: this is super important, as leaving any of the product on the hair may leave it feeling heavy and weighed down. Condition: once you’ve rinsed, seal the cuticle and lock in moisture with the Honey Infused Conditioner, the perfect partner to the Honey Infused Hair Wash. Your hair can finally start to grow: while hair care products free from sulfates don’t necessarily speed up growth, they can prevent breakage, and this will help you achieve the long locks of your dreams.  Less frizz: need I say more? Better for the environment: sulfate and paraben-free = less synthetic chemicals polluting the environment.   Wrapping up While sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) might not be as bad as some make them out to be, you might benefit from avoiding them. If you have dry hair or a dry scalp, if your skin or scalp is sensitive, if your hair is fine or frizzy or if you have chemically treated or colored hair, you might want to look for sulfate-free alternatives.
