How to refresh your hair between washes

We all know that washing your hair on a daily basis can be damaging: it strips the hair and scalp of its natural oils, whilst hot water can exacerbate dryness. Add daily heat styling to that and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. We recommend following a haircare routine where you wash your hair every 3 to 4 days, or longer if you can hold it out.

But how do you keep your hair looking, feeling and smelling fresh between washes? And how do you keep hair fresh after a workout without washing it? We’re giving you six tips on how to keep your hair fresh and how to make your hair smell good between washes!

How to refresh your hair between washes

6 tips to keep your hair looking fresh between washes

1. Revive & nourish dry ends

With the use of styling tools between wash days, the ends of your hair can end up looking a bit dry. Use a lightweight Leave-In Conditioner to re-hydrate between washes and detangle your hair before combing or brushing. Spray the Leave-In from an arm's length distance onto the mid-lengths of your hair down to the ends, combing through to ensure it is evenly dispersed.

To add shine to dull second-day hair, opt for our Honey Infused Hair Oil. You can use the Hair Oil daily to control frizz, enhance shine, smooth the hair’s cuticle and provide an extra boost of moisture and nourishment. The porosity and density of your hair will determine how many drops you need. A little goes a long way! Our recommendation is 1-2 drops for fine hair, 2-3 for medium hair, 3-4 for thick hair.

2. Refresh & scent with hair perfume

Our ultimate trick to refresh your hair between washes is Hair Perfume! Not only does our Honey Infused Hair Perfume refresh and scent hair with Gisou’s signature fragrance, it also adds moisture and shine thanks to its nourishing ingredients such as Mirsalehi Honey and argan oil.

Hair perfume is formulated especially for your hair and scalp, without ingredients that can dry out your hair or promote frizz. Compared to regular perfume, hair perfume contains just a trace amount of alcohol, so it’s much safer for your hair. It’s generally water-based, so it won’t weigh your hair down or leave it feeling crunchy or sticky, either. It’s the perfect solution for making your hair smell good between washes!

3. Touch up oily roots with dry shampoo

Dry shampoo has become a true savior for oily, second dry strands and sweaty post-workout locks.

Dry shampoos contain ingredients that absorb excess oil from your scalp and roots, leaving your hair looking fresh and voluminous. Simply spray on from an arms length, let it work in for a minute and then either brush through your hair or use your fingers to disperse the product on your roots.

While there are many options to choose from on the market, some dry shampoos are better than others. Look out for dry shampoos that contain nourishing ingredients

While there has been some conversation about whether dry shampoo is good for your hair and scalp, it’s important to properly cleanse your hair and scalp after using dry shampoo. We recommend using a Scalp Treatment pre-cleanse to help rebalance your scalp and add moisture.

Then follow up with an effective yet gentle Hair Wash to remove the scalp and roots from buildup caused by dry shampoo. Opt for a double cleanse (shampoo twice) to make sure you’ve removed any build-up. Follow up with a nourishing conditioner.

4. Enhance your natural texture with a Texturizing Spray

We all know how a good workout can ruin your smooth hairstyle or perfect blow-out. But it doesn’t need to be that way! Enhance your natural hair texture with a Texturizing Wave Spray. It will not only boost your waves, but also add some texture and volume to limp hair.

5. Redefine your curls

If you curl your hair, you’ll know that they tend to drop around day 2 or 3. There are some easy tricks to refresh and redefine your curls and keep them looking great between washes! First, add more definition and hold while removing frizz with a pea-sized amount of Polishing Primer. Simply warm the product between your palms and apply using your fingertips in a combing motion. This will help redefine your curls in just a few seconds!

Then, infuse your curls with a silky shine using a couple drops of Honey Infused Hair Oil. Warm the product between your hands and apply to the lengths of your hair.

6. Try different hairstyles with the Polishing Primer

If you feel that your hair is no longer fresh enough to keep it down, but you want to hold off on washing it, you can also use our Hair Primer to create sleek styles such as a sleek bun or ponytail, or for example to create the trending wet look effect. You can apply a small amount before slicking hair back, then add a small amount to a toothbrush and use that to comb the product in which smooths and controls any flyaways and baby hairs.

Some final tips to keep your hair looking fresh after a workout

There are several more tricks to make your hair look put-together between washes.

  • Loose waves: Put your hair in a loose bun or braid during sweaty workouts. Not only will it help keep your hair out of your face, the heat also helps create loose waves. Just add a bit of Texture Spray and dry shampoo and you’re good to go!
  • Crease-less: Another tip is to use a hair tie that doesn't crease your hair while you work out. Opt for a silk scrunchie or Invisibobble. Your hair will require less styling or heat tools after your workout!
  • Try co-washing: Lightly rinse your hair with water between washes and only using a conditioner.
  • Mask before your workout: The excess heat you produce while working out will help the mask penetrate more deeply, and it also helps to keep your hair nice and slicked back during exercise. Post-workout, comb out your 'treatment style' and either rinse and air-dry or slick back into a fresh pony until you can rinse out. It will look sleek and super chic.
