What you may not know is, there are many different ways to curl your hair! Tight spirals, big beachy waves, voluminous red-carpet curls… there are lots of curling methods to try and each one yields a different curl and texture. So, if you’re feeling like you’re in a hairstyle rut, try one of these fun new ways to curl hair. Something as simple as switching up your hairstyle can boost your entire mood! What to Know Before You Curl Your Hair Before we dive into the different ways to curl your hair, there are a few things you should know.  First, we want to stress how important it is to prepare and protect the hair anytime you’re using heat. Before you curl your hair, apply our Propolis Infused Polishing Primer to add shine and flexible hold. Then apply our Propolis Infused Heat Protectant Spray to prevent damage. Keep in mind that large barrels and large sections produce looser curls, while small barrels and small sections produce tighter ones. If you prefer big bouncy curls opt for Gisou’s 1-Inch Curling Tool and take wider, thicker sections wrapped loosely around the barrel. Whether you’re using a curling iron or straightener to curl your hair, choosing the best temperature for your hair type is also important. For fine, damaged, chemically processed, or dry hair, always use the lowest effective setting. Thick hair will need a higher temperature setting to produce a long-lasting curl. Allow each section to heat through completely before releasing your curling iron. Not allowing the section to heat all the way through is the leading cause of curls that fall out too quickly.  Let the curl sit in the palm of your hand for a few seconds before letting it go completely. Then, make sure every curl is completely cool before styling. Run a few drops of Gisou’s Honey Infused Hair Oil through your hair after curling to lock in moisture, add shine, and eliminate frizz. Always style freshly curled hair with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Avoid using a brush on curled hair because it might pull out the curl. If you’re brand new to curling your hair with a curling iron or straightener, consider practicing with the curling iron off first. This will allow you to master the curling techniques without burning yourself or applying unnecessary heat to your hair. 8 Different Ways to Curl Your Hair Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s dive into eight different ways to curl hair, with and without heat. Ways to Curl Your Hair with a Curling Iron Here are three different ways to curl your hair with a curling iron. Each technique will lead to different types of curls depending on the size of the barrel, the size of the sections, and the method you use to wrap your hair around the wand. Wide, Voluminous Curls with a Curling Iron If you want a wide curl with lots of volume, try the flat wrapping technique. You can curl the hair away from your face,  toward it or alternate, depending on your preference. Simply take a vertical section of hair, choose the direction you want to curl, and focus on keeping the hair flat as you wrap it around the iron. Wrap until you get to the ends and hold for about 15 seconds. Release the hair gently and allow the curls to cool before styling them gently with your fingers. The wider and thicker your sections are, the looser your curls will be. We recommend starting with sections that are about 1 ½” to 2” thick and experimenting until you find just the right size curl for you. Be careful not to twist the hair as you wrap, or you won’t get the same results! Loose Waves with a Curling Iron If you love the look of loose waves, try this technique with a 1-to-2-inch curling iron. To get the look, separate a 1 ½” section of hair and flat wrap without twisting until you’re about halfway down the length of your hair.  Allow the section to heat completely, then release it and flat wrap the rest of the section in the opposite direction. Leave the ends out for a more natural look. Allow the hair to cool completely before finger combing to separate the curls. Set the look with our flexible-hold, texturizing spray for definition and hold.  Spiral Curls with a Curling Iron If you like a tight, spiral curl with texture, this technique is for you. For this look, you’ll wrap ½” sections around your 1” curling iron. Twist the entire section from root to end, ensuring that you wrap the entire section in the same direction. You can curl all the hair in the same direction, either toward or away from your face, depending on your preference. Or you alternate directions for a multi-directional, more natural-looking curl.  For longer-lasting curls, let each section heat all the way through before releasing it into your palm. Let it sit in your palm for a few seconds before letting it go completely.  Allow your hair to cool completely and then shake out your curls with your fingers to separate them and add volume. Ways to Curl Your Hair with a Straightener There are several different ways to curl hair with a flat iron, too. Here are two techniques to try. Ribbon Curls with a Flat Iron Ribbon curls are tight curls that have a lot of bounce. One of the best things about this technique is that the curls can last for days, gradually loosening into a beachy wave as time goes by. Start with a medium-sized section of hair about ½” thick and 1” wide. Hold the section in one hand with the flat iron in a vertical position in your other hand. Your palm should be facing your head. Close your straighter at the roots of your hair and twist so that your palm is now facing away from your head. Slide your straighter down the hair slowly, all the way down to the end, and release. Allow the hair to cool and then separate the curls with your fingers. Run 2-3 few drops of our Honey Infused Hair Oil through the hair to tame frizz and add shine, spritz with our Propolis Infused Texturizing Wave Spray, and you’re done. S Waves with a Flat Iron This technique creates loose “S” waves, similar to push or finger waves, using a flatiron. In essence, you’re going to create an S shape with each section of hair and use your flat iron to set the shape. The result is a very loose, natural-looking wave. Take a horizontal section of your hair and pinch with your thumb and index finger right at the scalp. Move down the section forming an S-shape, pinching and heating with your straightener as you go. Repeat until you reach the end of the section. Allow your hair to cool before running your fingers through it to separate the waves. The result will be a loose, organic wave with a totally different texture than you would get with a curling iron. Feel free to spritz with our Propolis Infused Texturizing Wave Spray for added longevity. Ways to Curl Hair without Heat Heat tools can give you amazing curls and waves that last, but sometimes you want to give your hair a break from the heat. The good news is, there are countless ways to curl hair without heat. Loose Waves without Heat The easiest way to curl long hair without heat is to braid your hair before bed and sleep on it. One large braid will create loose waves, while two or more smaller braids will create tighter waves. When you wake up in the morning, undo the braid(s) and run a few drops of Honey Infused Hair Oil through your hair for softness and shine, and to tame any frizz. Beach Waves without Heat This technique will work best if your hair already has some texture to it, whether it’s a bit of natural wave or leftover curls from styling your hair the previous day. Start with damp hair and mist it generously with our Propolis Infused Texturizing Wave Spray from mid-shaft down to the ends.  Now scrunch the hair upwards with your hands to form the waves. The result will be an effortless, natural, beachy wave. Heatless Glam Curls with Velcro Rollers If you’re looking for big, voluminous, glamorous curls without heat, go ahead and pull out your large Velcro rollers.  Roll damp sections of hair from the end to the scalp and secure with clips or bobby pins. Leave the rollers in until your hair is completely dry.  Unroll your hair and run your fingers and a few drops of our Honey Infused Hair Oil through to separate the curl. The Gisou Bees Project is a special Gisou initiative in support of urban beekeeping practices to fight the declining bee populations worldwide. With this project, we show our support to urban beekeeping efforts by placing urban Gisou beehives in major cities around the world. Urban bees vs rural bees As an endangered species, bee populations are declining worldwide. At Gisou, it is our main focus to support bee populations in any way possible. Contrary to the belief that bees only thrive in rural areas, beehives in urban areas produce healthier bees because they have access to greater biodiversity and are not exposed to the harsh chemicals often used in agriculture.  As such, urban beekeeping is one way through which the health of bee populations can be strengthened. Aside from that, urban beehives contribute to the health of cities -  trees, shrubs, gardens and parks wouldn’t exist, let alone thrive in urban areas without healthy bees to pollinate them. Urban beekeeping doesn’t just support healthy bee populations, but also the communities the urban bees live in. The Gisou Bees Project For The Gisou Bees Project, we work together with local beekeepers who look after the Gisou bees on our behalf. Not only do we support urban bee populations this way, but we also support local beekeepers who continuously care for the bees and raise awareness in their local communities.  As we place our Gisou urban beehives in a city to improve the health of the city’s ecosystem, we therefore concurrently aim to carry out part of our mission - to raise awareness for the importance of bees.  The Bees Project in Paris  To launch our first Gisou Bees Project in June 2019, we brought a piece of the Mirsalehi Bee Garden to Paris by installing the honorary ‘Gisou at Galeries Lafayette Champs-Élysées Beehives’ on top of the urban rooftop garden of BHV (part of the Groupe Galeries Lafayette).  Today, our beehives in Paris contribute to the health of the Parisian ecosystem as they remain under the care of seasoned urban beekeeper, Gaël Cartron from Sous Les Fraises. The hives at BHV are surrounded by the urban Sous Les Fraises rooftop garden.  The Bees Project in New York  In New York City, we chose to work with beekeeper Andrew Coté, president of the New York City Beekeepers Association and founder of Andrew's Honey. In August 2019, we installed Gisou Beehives on a rooftop near Union Square together during our Take Out & Refill Pop-Up.  The installation of our beehives took place on August 17th 2019, in honour of National Honey Bee Day. Andrew Cote continues to care for the Gisou Beehives on our behalf, helping us to contribute to the livelihood of the bees and the overall urban ecosystem of New York City.  This bee season, Andrew added new hives, as the bees started to swarm meaning that the colony is thriving and expanding!  The Bees Project in Melbourne After our first beehives in Paris and New York, what better way to launch our third Gisou Beehive than with our fellow beekeeper Nicholas Dowse AKA @honey_fingers - an extraordinary beekeeper in Melbourne, Australia who’s efforts we’ve admired for years. Together, Nic and fellow beekeeper Georgah (@georgahcrane) take care of the Gisou bees on a rooftop in Fitzroy, Melbourne.  Honey Fingers is more than an urban beekeeping network - it’s a creative project that explores the intersections between farming, food, art, history, design and education, with bees taking the center stage.  The Next Step Moving forward, our intent is to expand the Gisou Bees Project to other cities around the world. On Earth Day 2019, we started a tradition with our first Gisou Sustainability Promise - a promise to work on becoming a more sustainable and transparent company. With various goals in mind, we set out to work towards a cleaner & greener Gisou, promising to stay accountable and to never stop improving. On Earth Day 2020, we renewed our commitment with an updated Sustainability Promise. Today, on Earth Day, we are taking a look back at some of the improvements we have made in the past year and looking ahead at those to be made in 2021.  RECAP & LOOK AHEAD 1. IMPROVE OUR BEE-CENTERED APPROACH IN THE MIRSALEHI BEE GARDEN  We always prioritize bee welfare and let the bees guide our beekeeping practices to derive Mirsalehi Honey and Mirsalehi Propolis, our key ingredients, in a bee friendly and sustainable manner. For instance, as we are growing, we will be expanding not only our Gisou team but also the number of bee colonies.  In 2021, we will expand the Mirsalehi Bee Garden with a second location, under the supervision of Negin's Dad.  2. RAISE AWARENESS FOR THE IMPORTANCE OF HONEY BEES In addition to taking care of the Mirsalehi Honey Bees, our mission is to raise awareness for the importance of all bees to our ecosystem.  To raise awareness for the bees last year, we shared weekly posts and a series of BeePeeking episodes via @gisou which reached nearly 2.7M. Since honey bees rely on flowers for nectar - their main source of food, we included sachets of Honey Bee Wildflower Seeds with each order placed during Spring/Summer. These were created so that you could support the honey bee life cycle by sowing wildflowers and sharing this with the rest of the community. For bee season this year, we have exciting plans to get you even more involved in supporting the bees.  Although we continue to support our beekeepers in Paris and NYC, we weren't able to expand our Gisou Bees Project (a special initiative in support of urban beekeeping practices) due to COVID-19 last year. We hope to make up for it by installing more hives in select cities within our global community! Next to the importance of honey bees, beekeepers are crucial for maintaining bee colony health. Going forward, we want to encourage more young people to explore what beekeeping is all about. We will be offering fun, interactive sources of information and initiatives with you very soon. Stay tuned!    3. INCREASE PRODUCTION TRANSPARENCY We strive to be transparent and keep you updated on all sustainable improvements and choices we make. In 2020, we launched our new website, and because you asked (and we listen!) we made sure that you can find all of the necessary Gisou product information there.  All of our packaging now includes a call to action to recycle. We’ll be sharing instructions on how to separate & recycle our products soon.   Continuing on this transparent note, we’re proud to share that our main manufacturing site is carbon neutral, fully powered by solar energy and actively works to reduce trash and water wastage.     4. GREEN OUR PRODUCT FORMULATIONS Without compromising on function and quality, we continually strive to make our formulations greener. After working with external experts, we’re proud to share that a formulation expert has joined our in-house Product Development team. With her ingredients expertise and knowledge of the natural world, she'll be optimizing our current and future healthy hair formulations. 5. IMPROVE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF OUR PACKAGING Work with more recycled, recyclable and biodegradable packaging materials. Sustainable packaging highlight: After 2 years in the making, we are proud to have launched our limited edition Curling Tool fitted in a 100% sustainable tool case. Made entirely of paper pulp, this custom-made case is fully recycled and recyclable. Additional packaging updates you may have noticed: We’ve switched over to FSC-certified paper (paper from sustainably managed forests), and downsized the packaging of our Honey Infused Hair Oil & Perfume to save on materials and make shipping more sustainable.  We also close all of our shipments with paper-based tape and our EU shipments no longer include packing slips. In addition, all of our product samples are packaged in fully biodegradable sachets.  We’ll continue to make sustainable packaging a top priority as we source new innovations.    A MORE SUSTAINABLE GISOU IN 2021 We look back at 2020 proud of the progress we made and determined to make even greater improvements in the year ahead. Sustainability remains an ongoing priority at Gisou with no finish line. We know we are not perfect, but we are passionate about improving and working hard to do so. Today, on our 5th birthday, we’re celebrating Gisou and the now iconic hero that started it all: our Honey Infused Hair Oil. Based on a homemade family recipe, the launch of the Honey Infused Hair Oil marked the start of our whirlwind journey!  On this special day, we’re throwing it back to some highlights of our most memorable moments, launches and major milestones from Gisou’s first five years. A favorite from the start 2015 - It’s been five incredible years since our founder Negin Mirsalehi launched Gisou’s iconic first product, The Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil. When we originally launched with the hair oil in November 2015, we sold out in less than three months. To this day, it’s our number-one bestseller worldwide. 2016-2017 - After the overwhelming success of our Hair Oil, we launched our first Propolis Infused hair styling product in July 2016, The Gisou Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray. One year later, we added some texture to the mix with the The Propolis Infused Texturizing Wave Spray. After honey, Propolis became our second key ingredient thanks to its strengthening and protecting properties. Like our Honey, our Propolis is sustainably sourced from the Mirsalehi Bee Garden, where Negin and her father continue the 6-generation tradition of beekeeping.   Parisian pop-ups & perfume 2018 - At the start of 2018, we added two products to our Honey Infused range: The Honey Infused Hair Mask and The Honey Infused Hair Oil Luxe Travel Size. These two products combined make up Negin’s go-to nourishing hair treatment! Later that year, we opened our first ever Pop-up store in Paris at the legendary tea house, Angelina, during Paris Fashion Week. Our Mirsalehi Honey inspired Christophe Appert, Angelina's pastry Chef, to create a unique Gisou at Angelina éclair. A little taste of Gisou in Paris! Since we received countless comments about the scent of our Honey Infused products, we decided to develop and launch a Hair Perfume that refreshes and scents hair with Gisou’s signature Honey Infused fragrance.  Creating a buzz 2019 - The following year was a very busy year at Gisou HQ. We expanded our Honey Infused line with two new, highly requested products; The Honey Infused Hair Wash & Conditioner. Our community was the first to buy and try this duo, as part of the mysterious ‘Blind Date’ on Valentine’s Day. Every May, we celebrate a key moment in our calendar; World Bee Day and the start of bee season. In 2019, we celebrated BIG with our Gisou Honey Jackpot prize pool. One lucky winner won the chance to meet Negin in the Mirsalehi Bee Garden in the summer of 2019.  Gisou in Paris, part two During that summer we also launched the Propolis Infused Polishing Primer, the third product in our styling range. Gisou came to Galeries Lafayette Champs-Élysées to celebrate the urban beekeeping culture in Paris through a co-branded pop-up experience. As part of the collaboration, we brought a piece of the Mirsalehi Bee Garden to Paris and partnered with Sous Les Fraises by installing beehives on top of the urban rooftop garden of BHV, which are still being cared for by our beekeeper in Paris. Take out & refill In August we introduced our Honey Infused Hair Perfume in Pocket Size and brought our beehives to NYC, in preparation for our first ever U.S. pop-up. In September we opened our Take Out & Refill pop-up store in New York. We transformed a typical NYC Papaya Dog into a completely Gisou-branded pop-up store in New York City fast food-style. In line with our Sustainability Promise, we encouraged New Yorkers to reuse and refill their Gisou products from our refill tanks.  Home for the holidays To end the year, we hosted the Gisou Gift Shop, a holiday pop-up store in Amsterdam. Our team created a special selection of limited edition content, exclusively for the Gisou Gift Shop. With the Gift Shop being in Amsterdam, we were home for the holidays!  Major milestones in 2020 2020 - Although 2020 has been unique in many ways, it has also been an opportunity for us to engage with you, our community, and your self-care routines at home. In April, we launched The Mini Series, which includes mini versions of four Gisou bestsellers, perfect for first-time Gisou users and for a self-care moment. In August we announced one of our most exciting projects so far: our launch at Sephora in the United States and Canada. When we first launched Gisou five years ago, offering our products at Sephora was something we could only dream of... We’re so excited and proud to have achieved this major milestone in such a short space of time! In September we revealed our most requested item ever: The Gisou Curling Tool. An item we're extremely proud of, we built it entirely from scratch based on Negin’s expertise, technical and design wishes. It’s the ultimate tool to create the perfect bouncy curls behind Negin’s signature look! Founded by macro influencer Negin Mirsalehi in 2015, the comprehensive haircare collection is currently sold in more than 30 countries worldwide. On August 18th, Gisou will expand its US distribution with its debut into Sephora. Negin Mirsalehi’s six-generation family business of beekeeping has grown Gisou to a bestselling brand in under five years; continuing her family’s story by threading together her skills and knowledge as a beekeeper alongside her father, a renowned beekeeper in the Netherlands, and her mother’s love of hairdressing and DIY haircare.
