There are a lot of factors involved, from choosing the right curling iron and styling products to finding the best temperature and technique for your hair type. Maintaining the health of your hair is also a top concern when using heat tools. Below, you’ll learn how to use a curling iron step by step and get our top tips plus mistakes to avoid for the healthiest, shiniest curls ever. How to Use a Curling Iron Step by Step Step One: Prep and Protect Your Hair Prepping and protecting the hair before styling is crucial for the best results and avoiding damage. If you’re starting this process with freshly washed, still-damp hair, apply our Honey Infused Leave-In Conditioner and use a wide-tooth comb to ensure that your hair is tangle-free. Use your other hand to wrap the length of your hair around the wand, working your way down without overlapping. You can leave the ends out or wrap them around the smallest part of the wand, depending on your preference. Below, you’ll find our favorite ways to get perfect curls on short hair, plus everything you need to know about prepping short hair to make curling as easy and effortless as possible. How to Prep Short Hair for Curling Prepping short hair before curling is every bit as important as the curling technique itself. It’s the secret to preventing damage and having long-lasting, bouncy curls that aren’t stiff or sticky. Here’s what you need to know!  Start with Freshly Washed Hair: Clean hair typically looks fuller, thicker, and bouncier, which is especially important when you have short hair. Be sure to choose a cleansing routine that nourishes the hair without weighing it down, like our Wash & Go Combo, which includes the Honey Infused Hair Wash and Conditioner. Add Workable Hold with a Hair Primer: Prepping short hair for styling with our Propolis Infused Polishing Primer will give it some grip and texture, making it easier to curl. When you’re curling shorter sections of hair, chances are higher that you’ll burn your fingers! Preheat Your Styling Tool: You’ll get the best results if you preheat your styling tool before you start curling. However, you should use the lowest effective heat setting to reduce damage to your hair. In general, fine or thin hair can get away with a lower heat setting and thicker hair will require a higher one. Do some experimenting to see what works for your hair. How to Curl Short Hair with a Curling Wand If your hair can make at least one full wrap around the barrel, it’s long enough to curl with a curling wand. It’s a great way to add some style and texture to short hair anytime you want to change up your look. A curling wand with a 1-inch barrel, like Gisou’s Curling Tool, is the most versatile for creating a variety of looks. Hold the curling wand in the hand that’s on the opposite side from the piece you wish to curl with the narrow end of the barrel pointing down, using your free hand to wrap 1-inch pieces evenly around the barrel.  Working with the bottom section first, wrap a 1-inch piece of hair around the barrel, starting close to the root and moving from the wider end of the barrel toward the narrow end. Alternating the direction of each curl will create a more natural look, while curling in the same direction is ideal for retro styles. If you like a more textured look, try leaving the ends out.  When you get to the top section, take extra care to twist the hair in the direction you want it to curl for the finished style. For extra lift at the crown, hold the barrel horizontally and get as close to the root as possible. Once the hair is completely curled, allow it to cool, then use your fingers or a brush to separate and style your curls. Or, use a brush to create a more relaxed effect. Set your style with a light mist of Texturizing Wave Spray. How to Curl Short Hair with a Curling Iron You absolutely can curl short hair with a curling iron with a few simple adjustments to your technique. Keep in mind that the smaller your curling iron barrel is, the tighter your curls will be. A ½ to ¾ inch barrel will produce tighter ringlets, while a 1-inch barrel is better for looser curls and waves.  Starting with the bottom section and working from the front to the back, lightly clamp a 1-inch piece of hair in the curling iron close to the root. Slide the curling iron to the end of your hair and allow the clamp to close fully. Twist the section away from your face and hold for 8-10 seconds.  As you release each curl, catch it in the palm of your hand and allow it to cool for a few seconds before releasing completely. This will help to set the curl. Repeat this process for the entire bottom section, alternating the directions for a natural look.  When curling the crown and face-framing pieces, think about how you want the hair to lay for the finished style. You can hold the barrel horizontally and curl right to the root for extra lift, curl the face-framing pieces toward or away from your face, or create a soft flip by sliding the barrel down the section and twisting your wrist slightly at the end. Once your entire head is curled, allow your hair to cool completely, then shake out and separate the curls with your fingers. Or, if you prefer, you can use a brush for a more relaxed look. Finish with a light spritz of Propolis Infused Texturizing Wave Spray to set your style. How to Curl Short Hair with a Flat Iron Learning how to curl hair with a flat iron takes a little practice, but this technique can be especially helpful if your hair is very fine and doesn’t like to hold a curl. A flat iron that’s ½  to 1-inch wide will work best for short hair. For short pixie cuts stick to a narrower width. Starting with the bottom section, clamp a 1-inch piece of hair in the flat iron as close to the root as possible. Gently slide the flat iron down your hair, twisting your wrist outwards as you go to create the curl. Work your way through the entire bottom section using the same process.  When curling the crown and face-framing pieces, find your part first. Then use your flat iron to manipulate your curls in the direction you want them to lay for the finished style. Pull the hair straight up from the root for extra lift at the crown. Allow your hair to cool completely, then use your fingers to shake out and separate the curls. Mist with Texturizing Wave Spray and scrunch to enhance the curls. How to Curl Short Hair Without Heat Using heat on your hair every day can be damaging. Here are three ways to curl short hair without heat for those days when you just want to give your hair a break. Pin Curls Pin curls are a great option for curly, short hairstyles without heat. All you need is a comb and some bobby pins. Start with damp hair that has been prepped with Propolis Infused Polishing Primer to provide workable hold and reduce frizz. Beginning with the bottom section first, take a 1-inch piece of hair and wrap it around your finger. Slide it carefully off your finger and pin it close to the scalp with two bobby pins in an “X” shape. Repeat for your entire head and leave the pins in overnight. Keep in mind that the tighter you wrap, the tighter your curls will be. The size of each pin curl will also affect the size of your curls. If you want very tight curls, experiment with ½-¾ inch pieces. For a looser curl, use larger sections of hair. When you’re ready to remove the pins, be gentle and avoid tugging. Comb through and style your curls with a wide-tooth comb or just use your fingers. A spritz of Texturizing Wave Spray will help to enhance your curls and keep flyaways under control. Headband Technique For this technique, you’ll need hair that’s at least collarbone length. Start by spritzing your damp hair with Texturizing Wave Spray. Place a stretchy headband on the top of your head like a crown. Starting with the top layer of hair, loop small sections of hair over and under the headband, working your way around the entire top layer.  Use the same technique to wrap the bottom layer, securing it with bobby pins if needed. Allow your hair to dry completely before gently removing the headband. The longer you leave your hair wrapped in the headband, the more defined your curls will be. Ruffle the curls with your fingers and set them in place with a spritz of Texturizing Wave Spray. Braiding Technique Braiding is another easy way to curl short hair for holiday and special occasion hairstyles. Experiment with French braids, Dutch braids, regular braids, and even fishtail braids to produce different effects.  You’ll want to start with damp hair that’s been detangled. Spritz with Texturizing Wave Spray, then apply a drop or two of Honey Infused Hair Oil to prevent frizz. Braid as desired, securing each braid with a small hair elastic.   The tighter and smaller the braids, the more defined your curls will be. For looser waves, create one large braid. Or divide the hair into equal sections and create multiple braids for a more defined curl. For short hair, it’s important to start the braids as close to the root as possible. Allow your hair to dry completely before removing the braids. The longer you leave the braids in, the more defined your curls will be and the longer they will last. Be careful not to tug on the hair when you take out your braids, then style with your fingers and finish with Texturizing Wave Spray for extra hold. Coily haircare is all about protection, moisture and hydration. Here are some of our best tips on how to take care of coily hair, and the best products for coily hair.  What is coily hair?  Coily hair, also known as Type 4, refers to hair that forms tight curls in a zig-zag pattern,  the coils tend to form an “O” or “Z” shape. Coily/afro hair can have a variety of textures, ranging from soft to coarse, and fine to densely packed.  Why does coily hair need extra care? Generally, this hair type is the driest and most fragile out of all hair types, due to the shape of the strands. The “O” or “Z” shape of coils makes it hard for the scalp’s natural oils to travel down the hair shaft, leaving it in need of added moisture. In addition, coily hair has fewer cuticle layers than other hair types, and these cuticles tend to be raised, making the hair vulnerable to breakage. Because of the thin and raised cuticle layer, coily hair can be more prone to frizz and tangling. All of these factors mean that a good haircare routine is essential for our coily community!  Knowing your Curl Type is very important as this will dictate the best products for your hair type. Take a look at this article to find out your curl type and some of our product suggestions!  How to take care of coily hair  Use protective styles Protective hairstyles are coily hair’s best friend! Opt for small braids, box braids, bantu knots, and twist-outs, to keep your hair looking amazing and avoid having to regularly re-style it. For the best results, try not to have the style too tight, opt for two weeks styled, and give it a one-week break before re-styling. Protect your hair while you sleep Protecting your hair while you sleep is important for all hair types, but coily hair especially! We recommend a silk or satin pillowcase (also great for your skin btw!) or a silk/satin bonnet. This will help protect your fragile strands from abrasion, and also help prevent moisture loss (cotton is a great material when worn on the body, but it can absorb the moisture from your skin and hair whilst you sleep).  Protect your hair from the heat Heat is rarely good for your hair, regardless of your hair type. For our coily haired fam, we always recommend using the Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray if you’ll be using any kind of heat styling tools. Revive & nourish dry ends  With the use of styling tools between wash days, the ends of your hair can end up looking a bit dry. Use a lightweight Leave-In Conditioner to re-hydrate between washes and detangle your hair before combing or brushing. Spray the Leave-In from an arm's length distance onto the mid-lengths of your hair down to the ends, combing through to ensure it is evenly dispersed. Curly and coily hair is more delicate than straight hair due to the shape of the hair strand. The spiral shape means the cuticle tends to be slightly lifted, which makes it more susceptible to damage, and more likely to lose moisture. On top of that, our natural oils cannot travel down the hair strand as easily as they can with straight hair, once again leaving curly to coily hair dry towards the ends. As a result, curls are more easily damaged and dehydrated than straight hair. Hair Care Routine for Curly Hair  1. This detangles the hair, helps prevent moisture loss whilst washing, and prevents frizz.  You can do a simple pre-shampooing treatment by applying our Honey Infused Hair Mask or Honey Infused Conditioner to dry hair, leaving it on for 20 to 30 minutes before following up with your usual washing routine.  2. Gentle cleanse The next step is to cleanse. Washing your hair will leave your hair and scalp feeling clean, removing any products, grease, dirt and dead skin cells which might have built up.  Opt for a gentle, sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo, like our Honey Infused Hair Wash. While some hair types can handle shampoos which contain sulfates, those with curly hair should definitely avoid it! Curly hair tends to be more fragile, so any kind of pulling or tugging at your curls can result in breakage. Do this by gathering all of your hair on top of your head and wrapping it up in a cotton t-shirt or hydrophilic towel. You can then leave it there to dry completely. This will help enhance your natural curl pattern as your hair dries, leaving you with more defined, bouncy curls.  Air-drying curly hair can result in an overload of frizz if not done correctly. Just be careful not to overdo it or you may relax them too much. How to Get Loose Curls Step by Step Here’s how to make loose curls step-by-step. Once you get the technique down, try experimenting using the tips above to get different effects and see what you like best! Step 1: Start with Clean, Conditioned Hair Begin your styling routine with clean hair. Our Honey Infused Wash and Go Combo cleanses and conditions without stripping the hair of natural oils. If you want your curls to last an extra long time, consider clipping each individual curl as you go and allow them to set until completely cool. If you have more than two sections, curl the remaining sections using the same technique until you reach the top section of your hair.  Step 6: Curl the Top Section of Your Hair Now, let down the top section of hair. Spritz the roots with Wave Spray and use your fingers to add volume and lift to the top layers. Curl this entire section away from your face, leaving the front pieces for last. When you get to the front pieces, smooth your curling wand down the hair and pull it away from your face. Create a bend by pausing parallel to the cheekbone, leaving the ends out. This will provide a face-framing effect that’s super flattering on any face shape or hair type. Step 7: Finish Your Style If you’ve clipped up your curls, the longer you leave them clipped up, the bouncier your curls will be. For the loosest waves, take out the clips as soon as the hair cools. We’re here to help you realise how you might be damaging your hair, and how you can prevent damaged hair!  What is damaged hair? Each hair has a protective outer layer (the cuticle) which protects the inner layers (cortex and medulla). On healthy hair, the cuticle lies closed and flat, giving the hair a smooth and shiny appearance. When hair is damaged, the cuticle can crack, lift or even be removed causing split ends and tangles. The raised cuticles also allow more moisture to escape. All in all, this makes the hair look dull, dry, and frizzy, and more prone to breakage.  We know it’s extremely difficult to put down the styling tools when you’re already in this position. We are here to tell you how to prevent damaged hair before it starts, so that bad hair days are a thing of the past. How you’re damaging your hair & how to prevent hair damage Heat & sun damage This may seem obvious, but heat is one of the main ways most of us damage our hair. Whether it's styling tools, hot water or even the sun, heat strips the hair of moisture, lifting and cracking the hair’s cuticle, making it more vulnerable to breakage.  Prevent damage from heat by: Using heat protection before heat styling such as our Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray which protects the hair up to 230ᵒC/446ᵒF. It also contains a UV filter to prevent sun damage, which makes it suitable to use before exposing your hair to the sun. Using heat tools that have a wide range of heat settings and using the lower settings when possible. Colour treating your hair There’s no escaping it, changing the colour of your hair makes it prone to damage. Instead, pull out your soft microfiber towel or even a simple cotton T-shirt. Both fabrics are softer and more gentle on your strands, and absorb the water without causing frizz.  Over washing Over-washing strips the hair of its natural oils, and can remove its protective layer (the cuticle), leaving your hair looking like it’s seen better days. We can’t all be blessed with thick, luscious locks. Many of us have to find ways to make fine or thin hair work, even though it often refuses to hold curls, easily falls flat, and can get oily real quick.  Fine or thin hair often requires a different routine and specific hair care products for fine hair. But first, let’s talk about the difference between fine and thin hair! What is fine hair? Having “fine” hair means that your individual hair strands are thin in diameter as opposed to thick hair which has coarse strands. To know if your hair is fine, simply take a strand of hair and lay it on a table next to a piece of sewing thread. If your hair is much thinner than the thread, you probably have fine hair. If it is almost the same as the thread then it is medium, and if it is the same or thicker than the thread then your hair is coarse.  The difference between fine hair and thin hair Fine hair can sometimes be confused with “thin” hair, which means that your hair may have fewer strands of hair on your head resulting in less volume.
