Things to Know About Wavy Hair

To a certain degree, all waves are technically curls. But not all curls are waves. Waves tend to curve in an S-pattern, moving in the same direction from the roots to the ends. That being said, everyone’s waves are different… Some are more relaxed while others are nearly ringlets.

Wavy hair is classified as a Type 2 hair type, which is broken down into three subcategories. Although many people identify primarily with one subcategory, it’s not uncommon to fall somewhere between. It can even change from day to day depending on your routine, the weather, and numerous other factors.

  • Type 2A: Type 2A wavy hair is thin and fine. The hair tends to be flatter at the roots and form a wider wave through the lengths of the hair. The individual strands form an S-pattern when dry and it’s easy to curl or straighten with hot tools.
  • Type 2B: Type 2B wavy hair has a moderate wave from root to tip., which also comes with more frizz. When dry, the hair forms an S pattern that’s prone to moderate frizz.
  • Type 2C: Type 2C wavy hair is thicker than the other two wave types, with more waves near the scalp. The hair tends to be coarser and is the most prone to frizz, but also forms an S shape when dry.

The Perfect Everyday Wavy Hair Routine

Waves are often flatter near the root and get wider in the length, which can lead to an almost triangular look. But this can be overcome with the right wavy hair routine. Wavy hair doesn’t need as much moisture as tight curls, but it is still prone to dryness, dullness, and breakage.

This wavy hair routine is all about nurturing, protecting, and defining your waves without unwanted harmful ingredients like sulfates and parabens.

Step 1: Cleanse

Your wavy hair routine starts with gently cleansing the hair. Be sure to choose a sulfate-free hair cleanser, like our Honey Infused Hair Wash. Sulfates are drying to the hair and can be irritating to the scalp as well. They can also make the hair more prone to frizz by lifting the hair cuticle.

Step 2: Condition and Detangle

All wavy hair types can benefit from applying a deep conditioning hair mask once or twice a week. Our Honey Infused Hair Mask nourishes the hair deeply, repairs damage, and restores the health of your hair over time.

After you rinse out your hair mask, saturate the lengths of your hair from root to ends  with a nourishing conditioner. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle the hair while the conditioner is still in your hair. Scrunch the conditioner into your hair to help it penetrate the hair shaft and then rinse with lukewarm or cold water - never hot because it can dry out the hair.

Our Honey Infused Conditioner is lightweight, so it won’t weigh down your hair. It will help to lock in the moisture and nourishment from your hair mask by closing up the cuticle. We recommend leaving in the hair for three to five minutes for best results.

Step 3: Moisturize, Protect, and Style

Adding extra moisture to wavy hair is essential because it’s prone to dryness, breakage, and lack of shine. All three wavy hair types can benefit from applying a leave-in product, like our Honey Infused Leave-In Conditioner, to hydrate the hair, prevent frizz, and improve elasticity to reduce breakage.

Hair oil is another multi-tasking hair product that belongs in every wavy hair routine. Applying just a few drops from the midshaft to the ends will seal in moisture, prevent frizz, and further improve elasticity to protect the hair from damage. Gisou’s Honey Infused Hair Oil nourishes the hair with the powers of Mirsalehi Honey and seals the hair shaft to prevent moisture loss.

Whether you’re going to air dry your hair, or heat style it, our Propolis Infused Polishing Primer reduces and prevents frizz, provides workable hold, and speeds drying time. All you need is a pea-sized amount, worked through damp hair from roots to ends.

If you plan to diffuse your hair or spend time in the sun that day, now is the time to apply a heat protectant as well. Our Propolis Infused Heat Protection Spray is a great choice because it protects the hair during heat styling and also contains a UV filter.

Step 4: Dry

How to Air Dry Wavy Hair

Using a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel, gently scrunch the excess water out of your hair. Let your hair air dry. You can use a claw clip to keep the hair off your face while it dries if desired.

How to Blow Dry Wavy Hair with a Diffuser

Blow drying your wavy hair with a diffuser will give you a more defined and voluminous look, while also providing more control over your style. Work your way through the steps above, including and up to towel drying your hair.

Begin by cupping your hair several inches from the roots with the diffuser and scrunch it upward toward your scalp. Hold for a few seconds and move on to the next section. Once your roots are completely dry, use the same method to dry the lengths of your hair in sections.

Finish up by scrunching out any crunchiness and style gently with your fingers. A few drops of hair oil is the perfect finishing touch for added moisture and shine.

Try the “Plopping” Technique

We admit the name sounds a little silly, many naturally wavy and curly-haired girls and guys swear by the plopping technique for air-drying their hair to create a more defined look with less frizz. All you need is a big cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel laid out in front of you on a flat surface.

Lean over the shirt/towel and “plop” your hair right in the middle. Now, gently wrap the shirt or towel around your hair and head, then secure it at the base of your neck. Allow your hair to air dry like this for 30 minutes to an hour.

This technique allows the hair to dry in its natural wave pattern. This creates more defined longer lasting curls since gravity isn’t pulling the hair down as it dries.

Step Five: Finish Off Your Style

Once your hair is dry, you can use your fingers to separate the waves. Keep in mind that the waves will loosen over time. You don’t want to do too much or they may fall out sooner than you would like.

To give your waves some extra hold and texture, apply a couple of sprays of our Propolis Infused Texturizing Wave Spray. It’s a bit like a light hold hair spray combined with a sea salt spray, keeping the waves in place without weighing them down.

To apply, hold the spray at arm’s length, spritz the product onto your hair, and scrunch to activate and define your waves. This technique will create a more textured look with an all-day hold.

Creating the Right Wavy Hair Routine for You

This wavy hair routine is the perfect starting point for all wavy hair types, but you should feel free to tweak it to suit your individual hair needs.

For example, type 2A waves often do best with just a lightweight leave-in conditioner, while 2C requires deeper conditioning to combat the frizz. Type 2B falls somewhere in the middle, and might choose their conditioner based on weather conditions or how their hair feels on a given day.

The key is to experiment with different products and techniques until you find the wavy hair routine that gets you the results you’re looking for.

Protecting Your Waves While You Sleep

This wavy hair hack, sometimes called the “pineapple method,” protects your waves from tangles and frizz while you sleep. It’s a smart way to maintain your style in between wash days.

Before you go to bed, pull your hair into a high ponytail. Slip a scrunchie over the base of your pony, wrapping it loosely to hold the hair in place without unnecessary tension.

In the morning, take out the scrunchie, flip your head over and give your hair a gentle shake to fluff up your waves. Follow up with a drop or two of hair oil to bring back the shine and refresh your waves.

How to Maintain Wavy Hair

  • Give your wavy hair some extra TLC with a weekly hair mask that adds hydration and nourishes the hair to improve overall hair health and elasticity.
  • Always comb wavy hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Avoid using a brush, which will create frizz and could lead to breakage.
  • Hair oil is an essential product for taming frizz and flyaways. Apply a drop or two as needed for adding shine and hydration to wavy hair. This will also improve elasticity and help to prevent breakage.
  • Don’t neglect your scalp. Scalp care is key for healthy hair because it’s the foundation from which your hair grows. Incorporating our Honey Infused Scalp Treatment into your routine twice a week supports the scalp’s microbiome and promotes overall scalp health.
  • Regular trims are essential for all hair types, especially hair that’s prone to frizz. No product can seal split ends once they occur. Regular trims will reduce frizz at the ends of your hair and keep it looking and feeling healthier overall.
