Hair Care Routine for Dry or Damaged Hair

Dryness and damage are two of the most common hair concerns. It is no surprise that nearly everything that we put our hair through has the potential to damage it or leave it dried out. Thankfully, there are simple steps you can take to hydrate and moisturise your dry or damaged hair to bring it back to its former glory.

The difference between dry and damaged hair

Dry and damaged hair are two different things. They may look very similar but require slightly different solutions. Let’s get into the difference between dry and damaged hair:

Dry hair

Dry hair is caused by a lack of natural oils on your hair. These oils act as lubricants all along the hair fibre to make it feel softer and look shinier. A little too much oil can weigh down your hair and make it look greasy. Too little oil results in brittle, frizzy, dry hair that is often accompanied by a flaky scalp and a rough texture.

Damaged hair

Each hair strand is protected by overlapping scales called cuticles. When your hair is healthy, these cuticles lie flat and leave your hair looking smooth and feeling soft. If your hair has been damaged, these cuticles are rough, lifted and even removed, resulting in dullness, split ends, breakage and frizz.

What causes dry or damaged hair?

Cause #1: Environment

The weather plays a huge role in your hair’s moisture levels. Cold, dry weather, combined with indoor heating can suck the moisture from your hair. Hot, sunny weather also puts your hair under strain. UV-rays damage the hair and break down its pigment and the sun’s heat pulls the moisture from your strands.

Cause #2: Haircare routine

As much as we all love a fresh head of highlights or a beautiful balayage, all chemical styling processes damage the hair structure and exacerbate dryness. High temperatures from styling also cause your hair to lose a considerable amount of moisture.

Over time, these processes weaken your hair, and damage your cuticles, leaving your hair looking and feeling dry and damaged.

Using hair styling products specifically formulated to support your hair through styling and chemical processes is key to maintaining hydration levels and keeping your hair looking and feeling healthy.

Cause #3: Hair type

Unfortunately, our curly community tends to be more prone to dryness and damage due to the nature of their strands. The oils from your scalp cannot make their way down curly hair as easily as with straight hair, often leaving the ends feeling dry. In addition, curly hair tends to be more fragile than other hair types, making it more prone to breakage. Also, as we get older, our scalp slowly produces fewer natural oils, leaving your hair drier.

We know what you’re thinking - what on earth isn’t causing dryness and damage then? How on earth do I fix this? Don’t worry, we’re here to give you the perfect routine to keep your locks hydrated and healthy.

Oil mask routine

Routine for dry and damaged hair

Haircare products infused with honey are perfect for hydrating and strengthening dry and damaged hair. Honey is a humectant with natural emollient properties. The emollients in honey smooth out the hair follicle and add shine, while the humectants bond with water in the air, which provides lasting moisture for dehydrated locks. Honey is also full of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants that repair, protect, and nourish the hair.

Let us introduce to you, the ultimate nourishing routine for dry or damaged hair:

Now let’s introduce you to two perfect restoring routines for dry and damaged locks, using these three honey-infused favourites.

Honey Hair Oil

Negin Mirsalehi’s signature mask treatment

Once per week, take a liberal amount of the Honey Infused Hair Mask, mixing in 3 to 4 drops of the Honey Infused Hair Oil. Apply this mixture to clean, slightly damp or dry hair, coating the hair from root to tip.

Pro tips:

Wet your hairbrush and brush through the hair before applying the mixture, this will dampen the hair slightly, and allow for more easy distribution of the products.

Wrap your hair in a cotton t-shirt to create heat and allow the products to penetrate even deeper into the hair strands.

Leave this to soak for as long as possible (even overnight) and then follow up with your normal washing routine.

After you have washed your hair, when it is about 60% dry, apply the Honey Infused Leave-In Conditioner to the lengths of your hair to lock in the moisture from your treatment. Brush this through to make sure the product is evenly distributed and allow it to dry completely.

Hydrating washing routine

Wash your hair with our Honey Infused Hair Wash, squeeze out all excess water and then apply the Honey Infused Hair Mask from root to tip. Allow it to soak for 5-10 minutes before rinsing, and follow up with the Honey Infused Conditioner to lock in moisture.

After your washing routine, apply the Honey Infused Leave-In conditioner to damp hair to hydrate your hair and prevent frizz as your hair dries. You can then leave your hair to air dry, or follow your usual styling routine.

Once the hair is dry, finish off your look with 1 to 3 drops of the Honey Infused Hair Oil, this will help lock in all the nourishment from the leave-in conditioner and hair mask. Warm the product up in the palms of your hands and apply it to the lengths of your hair for added moisture and beautiful shine!

Wrapping up

While it may seem like everything is working against having healthy, hydrated hair, giving your hair a little extra nourishment and care with nourishing products a couple of times a week will help you win this battle, we promise!
